Gears 5 Map Builder

Gears 5 Map Builder will let players create their own levels

A Gears 5 Map Builder has been announced for the next game in the Gears of War franchise, giving players the opportunity to create their own levels for the very first time. The next game from The Coalition is stepping things up with a brand-new game mode, and soon players will be able to create their own maps to enjoy some fantastic third-person shooter action.

As noted on the official Gears of War website, a Gears 5 Map Builder is on the way. Players will be able to “create, play, and share” their own maps with the brand-new Map Builder tool. This surprising announcement was just a single sentence amidst of sea new information that has come out about the game since it was shown at Microsoft’s 2019 E3 conference on June 9, 2019.

Unfortunately, it appears that there are going to be some restrictions for the Map Builder. The news post on the Gears of War website notes that this level editor is going to be used for the upcoming Escape game mode that was also announced yesterday. It doesn’t explicitly rule out the Gears 5 Map Builder being used for other game modes, but it’s likely that they would have mentioned it had they intended this new feature to be used for the various other game modes that players will be able to enjoy when the game releases on September 10, 2019.

That’s not to say that we won’t get to use the Gears 5 Map Builder in other game modes. While The Coalition has only specifically mentioned the new Escape game mode, it’s entirely possible that they’ll expand the Map Builder’s functionalities to other game modes at a later date. Level editors let players create interesting content and extend the life of a game, so here’s hoping that they broaden its capabilities a little bit sometime after the game’s launch.

Gears 5 launches for the PC and Xbox One on September 10, 2019.
