Players still enjoying multiplayer on a number of Naughty Dog titles will only be able to do so for a limited time. The company will be shutting down the Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, and The Last of Us multiplayer servers.
Naughty Dog announced that it would be shutting down the servers for its PlayStation 3 games in a recent blog post. The team stated that it’s taking down these servers on September 3, 2019, at 7:00 PM ET. For The Last of Us, the shut down includes servers the game’s downloadable expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind.
“It’s bittersweet to say the least,” states Naughty Dog’s Scott Lowe. “Uncharted and The Last of Us multiplayer on the PS3 are defining entries in Naughty Dog’s history and we’ve been honored to support the passionate communities that have grown around them for almost a decade. We have so many fond memories from playing alongside you throughout the years.”
As a farewell gift to players still enjoying the games, the developers announced that they would making all of their multiplayer DLC free on PSN. This includes both gameplay and vanity items that were released for these games.
With the shut down of select Naughty Dog servers, players will no longer be able to play the multiplayer modes of Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3. While both of these games were included in Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection on PlayStation 4, this collection did not include those games’ respective multiplayer modes.
However, The Last of Us on PlayStation 4 does include multiplayer. As such, fans of the game will be able to continue playing the games multiplayer on that console.
Naughty Dog’s games tend to focus on telling cinematic stories throughout their single-player campaigns. However, the company has made plenty of efforts to add fun multiplayer experiences to them as well. This includes the various innovative modes such as “Factions,” which was added to The Last of Us. With the shutdown, fans must now bid farewell to some of the most memorable multiplayer third-person shooting experiences on PlayStation 3.
