Cyberpunk 2077 release date ‘absolutely not’ in 2019

Despite the good news that Cyberpunk 2077 would have a showing at E3, fans have been hit with a few blows. The latest in the line of unfortunate events is the Cyberpunk 2077 release date will “absolutely not” be in 2019. This is according to a tweet from Jason Schreier, news editor for Kotaku and a man with many inside sources.

Even though the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter page confirmed that the game would appear at E3 this year, some disappointing news followed. First, the presentation at E3 would be purely cinematic. It doesn’t look like players will get their hands on a playable demo, which is often a good indication that the release date is still a long way off.

This news was followed shortly after by a confirmation of those fan worries. In a tweet responding to rumors that Cyberpunk 2077 would come to us in 2019, Schreier responded by saying that would “absolutely not” happen.

Considering his penchant for getting inside scoops, he’s hardly an unreliable source. Combined with a lack of playable demo at E3, it’s probably safe to say we’ll be waiting for Cyberpunk 2077 for a while longer. That said, we’ve been waiting since the game was first announced in 2012, so at this point, fans have learned the art of patience.

Since the initial teases and trailers, players have a pretty good idea of what they’ll be getting into in Cyberpunk 2077. It’s a first-person RPG with an open world and non-linear story taking place in the dystopian Night City, California. The main character, V, can receive upgraded weapons and cybernetic enhancements to make taking down baddies easy. Clothing also not only serves as armor, but has different in-game effects depending on what’s worn.

The game was based on the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020, which came out in the late 1980s. Since 2020 is fast-approaching, it makes sense to push back our fictional doomsday to a more realistic timeline. At the very least, it looks like the video game might accidentally pay homage to its predecessor by coming out in the original year of the Cyberpunk dystopia.
