Oddworld Inhabitants have released the Oddworld: Soulstorm trailer, reintroducing the iconic hero Abe to the gaming public. The trailer included the first glimpse at Soulstorm gameplay footage. In addition, it referenced something Oddworld fans have been waiting for since the ’90s: the once-scrapped Oddworld Quintology.
For those unfamiliar with the Oddworld series, a quick overview may be in order. The first game in the series, Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, released in 1997 to an enthusiastic reception. The plot follows a slave named Abe who revolted against his captors and led his friends to freedom.
Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus picked up where the original left off. It continued the story of Abe and his friends as they fight to cure a terrible sickness.
The new trailer opens by confirming Oddworld: Soulstorm is a re-imagining of the second game in the planned quintology, Abe’s Exoddus. By mentioning the Quintology as a whole, one wonders if we’ll see more remakes and finally get the completion of the Oddworld story. We can hope!
The trailer follows Abe as he rides a train in a frantic panic while the world around him burns. Cut to Abe leading his fellow Mudokons through a hellish factory where they’re shot at and narrowly avoid death at every corner. Abe is on a quest to ignite a revolution and lead his kinsmen to freedom once again.
We’re promised a new crafting system as well. Players can loot the factory as they run through it and use the items to craft helpful goods. I wonder what Abe will make out of the battery, bottle cap, dirty rags, and empty bottle he finds in the trailer.
The teaser ends with more fire as the factory collapses around a horrified Abe. While the final platforms for the game have not been confirmed, we are given a rough release date: early 2020.
