Rocket League esports shop will give revenue to players and teams

Psyonix recently revealed that Rocket League‘s Rocket Pass 3 is coming on April 17. The update will come with weekly challenges, new items, and XP boosts. However, the team also made note of something called the Esports Shop. While details have been a bit scarce since then, we’ve finally learned that the Rocket League esports shop will give revenue to players and teams.

The store comes out on April 16 at 10 AM PDT under the Rocket League Esports Shop pilot program. It will bring with branded cosmetics like player banners, wheels, decals and more. Each brand is based on one of the best teams in the Rocket League Championship Series. Examples include Cloud9, Rogue, Splyce, and Evil Geniuses.

Psyonix says that around 30% of revenue will go to the teams and players, with another portion going towards a prize pool for the North American and European Championship Leagues. The dev team is also looking into other territories for this program. So, how much will these items cost us laymen?

To start, branded items will be in packs that cost Esports tokens, a new premium currency. These will come in packs of 100, 600, 1200, and 2,500 tokens, costing $0.99, $4.99, $9.99, and $19.99, respectively. Moreover, since these are premium items, they aren’t tradable. Interestingly, none of the items will be permanently available, either.

Psyonix notes that only six items will be available in the shop each day, which will refresh at noon PDT. Each item will have a timer that shows how long it’ll last, with some staying for 24 hours and others 48. This is a bit of a mind game, really, as it’s pushing players to spend without putting much thought into it. It’s not exactly clear why there can’t just be a shop with all of the branded items in it.

Regardless, it’s interesting to see Rocket League providing a direct way for fans to support their favorite teams. The competitive scene is one of the reasons this game is so successful, so it’s nice to see Psyonix take note of that. Here’s hoping this shop will positively contribute to the growth of esports.
