Mortal Kombat 11 Switch version will have a hefty day one patch

So far, it looks like the Mortal Kombat 11 Switch port runs surprisingly well, according to some early accounts from PAX East. It’s a bit of a surprise, considering the limitations of the hardware. However, regardless if you’re picking up the digital or physical version of the game, you’ll need a huge memory card.

The game recently popped up on the Nintendo eShop, set for release on April 23. You have two different options to choose from with the game. Both the standard version ($59.99) or the Premium Edition ($99.99), which comes with additional characters, can be pre-ordered. No matter which one you choose, the core game clocks in at around 6.537GB in size. That doesn’t sound too bad at first, but there’s also the day one patch to consider, which is much larger.

The patch, once set live on the game’s release day, clocks in around 15.9GB in size. That brings the total download to just over 22GB. That means if you want to get the game digitally, you’ll have no choice but to upgrade memory on your system. Having a 32GB card just won’t cut it.

It sounds like the patch will also be required for the physical cartridge version. Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed that just yet. If that’s the case, it’ll be less of a burden than digital, but still require you to clear a whole lot of space on your card.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a major third party release require a huge download to run on Nintendo’s system. Games like NBA 2K19, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus and Doom have all required a secondary download. And usually, it’s been pretty big in size, going anywhere from 5GB to 12GB, depending on the game.

We’ll let you know if Warner Bros. officially comments on the day one patch. But for the time being, it never hurts to bump up to that 400GB memory card.
