Gearbox CEO says Troy Baker turned down Rhys role for Borderlands 3

While a lot of Borderlands fans are thrilled for this fall’s third go-around, it’ll be missing a key ingredient — Troy Baker. But a new tweet suggests there may be some conflict over who’s to blame for his omission. Earlier this week, Baker said he was displeased about not being able to reprise his Tales From the Borderlands character for the sequel. He noted simply “that isn’t me” when asked about his return in Borderlands 3, and blamed Gearbox for not including him.

But now a new tweet from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford suggests that Baker didn’t want to take part. When a fan asked on Twitter about why the actor wasn’t fulfilling the role, Pitchford said, “You’ll have to ask Troy. I was told by the audio director that he turned it down. Fortunately, with how Rhys appears in the game, I don’t think it actually matters at all. You’ll see for yourself when the game comes out and you may disagree with me on that or not.”

This sounds quite different from Baker’s take on the matter. When asked about his character, he said at the time, “If Gearbox decides that they’ll let me do it, that’ll be awesome. I have no idea. There was a possibility that I was gonna be in it, then I saw that epic, epic trailer, and everyone’s like ‘oh my god, there’s Rhys!’ And I went, ‘well, there we go.’ If they’re going to bring back characters from Telltale Borderlands, it should be the people that originated the characters.”

A fan was quick to point this out on Pitchford’s Twitter page with a follow-up post, but he has yet to respond on the matter.

Not only does this debate have us wondering what the truth is, but also to what extent Rhys is involved with the game. If Pitchford insists that it doesn’t matter at all, does that mean he’ll just have a tiny side role? We will find out when the game comes out on September 13.
