Octopath Traveler PC port rated in South Korea

Square Enix’s Switch RPG Octopath Traveler may be making its way to PC based on a rating by the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea.

Though the rating has since been pulled from the board’s website, a ResetEra poster by the name of Rodjer was able to take a screenshot before the entry was pulled. The screenshot shows that Bandai Namco is stated to be the publisher of Octopath Traveler in South Korea. This is not unusual as Bandai Namco has published a number of Square Enix’s titles in the country.

Octopath Traveler originally launched on Nintendo Swith on July 13, 2018. The game made an impression with its “HD-2D” art style. This style combined 16-bit era style character sprites and textures with modern polygonal environments and high definition effects.

The combination of the HD-2D art style as well as other callbacks to old 16-bit JRPGs meant Octopath Traveler was well received at launch. Our own review of the game called it “the right way to do nostalgia.”

Even before it released, however, there had been speculation on whether or not Octopath Traveler would be ported to other systems such as the PS4, Xbox One, and the PC. The now-removed listing from the Korean ratings board seems to show that at the very least, the PC is getting a port.

Square Enix has yet to say anything regarding a PC port or port to any other system for that matter. That said, non-Switch owners will have an way to experience Octopath Traveler via its smartphone prequel. Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent was announced for iOS and Android last March, and will notably feature the same HD-2D art style as the original Nintendo Switch release. The game will free-to-play, though the developers have yet to reveal how it will be monetized. Also yet to be revealed are the game’s release date, and whether or not it’s coming to the West.
