PSVR sales top 4 million

PSVR sales top 4 million, still less than 5 percent of PS4 owners

This week’s State of Play broadcast from Sony had a distinct PSVR focus. Games like No Man’s Sky and Concrete Genie will have full VR modes. Others like Blood and Truth and Marvel’s Iron Man VR are big, action-heavy VR titles. Sony also released updated PSVR sales numbers with these game announcements.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony’s Sid Shuman revealed that PSVR sales have topped 4 million units. All-told, 4.2 million PSVR headsets have been sold-through as of March 3, 2019. PSVR sales saw a healthy increase over the back half of 2018, selling over 1 million units since August 2018. While the number is higher than any individual competitor, PSVR attach rate is still under 5 percent for PS4 owners.

The latest PS4 sales numbers pin it at 91.6 million consoles worldwide, as of December 31, 2018. A little less than 4.6 percent of all PS4 owners also own the PSVR headset. The headset was released in October 2016, just about one month before the PS4 Pro. It sold nearly 1 million units in its first holiday season. By the end of 2017 PSVR sales reached 2 million units.

Sony has continued to support the PSVR with first and third-party games. From its roster of first-person studios titles like Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Everybody’s Golf VR to third-party titles like Resident Evil 7 and Tetris Effect, the breadth of VR titles continues to grow.

A ton of other PSVR titles were detailed in the post over on the PlayStation Blog. No Man’s Sky is getting full VR support alongside the Beyond expansion later this year. Five Nights at Freddy’s is getting in on VR this Spring.

Sony is probably hoping that the glut of games coming to PSVR will get people interested in the product enough to shell out for a headset. The device’s cost continues to be a barrier for many people, although the headset can be found for under $200 regularly. Bundles including the PlayStation Camera, games, and sometimes PS Move controllers range from $250 to $350.
