Kojima Says 20% Of Metal Gear Solid V Will Feature Supernatural Elements

Speaking with GT.TV's Geoff Keighley, Hideo Kojima expressed the desire to reinvent the Metal Gear Solid franchise in the upcoming fifth, mainline installment. Following the reveal during Kojima Production's Fox Engine panel at GDC, Kojima said the Roman numeral in MGSV's title is representative of this revolution in the franchise.

"Since [MGS4] the west has really caught up and in many ways we're threatened by games from the west," Kojima said via translator. "We really want to reinvent ourselves with this game so shifting from '5' to 'V' represents our will for victory."

Part of that transformation will come in the form of science fiction, horror, and supernatural elements, as seen in Phantom Pain footage. "There will be a balance… but [the game] will be primarily 'real' but that said, it does take place roughly around 1984 so there will be influences from that era," Kojima said. "If I were to give a percentage for the balance, maybe 80% real and 20% scifi or supernatural elements."

Kojima backpedaled when asked if that 20% would change up gameplay, but I'm hoping it offers the development team opportunities to experiment and mess with players a la Psycho Mantis. Are you still excited knowing that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are actually two parts of the same game?
