Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch‘ Persson has claimed that the QAnon conspiracy theory, which suggests that high-profile political figures such as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are engaged in a widespread pedophilia ring, is “legit.” After openly advocating the far-right conspiracy, Notch added that it had “gotten people digging real deep to uncover the truth.”
Notch took to Twitter to express his thoughts regarding QAnon, tweeting his belief of the conspiracy theory to his 3.7 million followers. The theory, which began in 2017 following a series of cryptic posts to 4chan, alleges that every political leader prior to Donald Trump was a criminal involved in activities that encompass more-or-less every other modern conspiracy theory. Everything from Pizzagate to 9/11 is covered by QAnon, with believers investing their faith in a mysterious figure known only as “Q” who is alleged to post these messages to 4chan and its even more radical peer, 8chan.
The conspiracies that circle QAnon are so widespread that no two believers support the same information. For instance, some believe that Hillary Clinton drinks the blood of unborn babies in a satanic ritual. Others believe that John F. Kennedy Jr. is still alive and is actually the individual behind the “Q” persona. The vast majority believe that Donald Trump’s tweets contain references to QAnon and covertly point its followers in the direction of evidence, with the prevailing theory being that the president was brought into government in order to prevent the criminal activities of former governments.
The ludicrousness of QAnon’s allegations have led to its followers being widely derided, with few high-profile public figures attaching themselves to the conspiracy theory. However, Notch has now stepped out as perhaps the most well-known supporter of the theory yet.
In a tweet posted over the weekend, Notch said: “Q is legit. Don’t trust the media.”
When another Twitter user replied that those who believe Q is real are “delusional,” Notch responded: “What do you mean by real? Someone is definitely posting under that name, and whoever it is had gotten people digging real deep to uncover the truth. And that part IS legit. It doesn’t matter who Q is, of [sic] if he’s “real”.”
Notch created Minecraft in 2009, before leaving developer Mojang in 2014 after the company was acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Notch has caused controversy on Twitter before, with him having tweeted his support of a “heterosexual pride day” before saying that those who were against the idea “deserve to be shot” (via Mandatory). He later deleted the tweet, writing: “So yeah, it’s about pride of daring to express, not about pride of being who you are. I get it now.”
