Hideo Kojima Talks Photo-Realistic Fox Engine, Sounds Next-Gen

Hideo is teasing again!

While speaking to Kotaku, Hideo Kojima opened up regarding his latest investment: Fox Engine. He is confident it will be impressive, and stated the following:

The concept of the ‘Fox Engine' is photo-realism.

He continued:

At Kojima Productions we're aiming for a line where even simple CG models look photo-realistic when you zoom out of the game screen.

This begs the question: Is Metal Gear Solid 5 whatever he's working on a next-gen title? Fans of Kojima's work sure hope so, and deferring to use the latest technology will ensure that his next game is a leg-up from Metal Gear Solid 4, a game that was jaw-dropping for its time.

Images of Fox Engine released last year showed an engine that's capable of pretty visuals, but The Phantom Pain looks current-gen. That's not to say that it looks bad, but it isn't at the level that the PlayStation 4's Killzone: Shadow Fall is on, for example. Moreover, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was announced as strictly a PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 game. With all things considered, there's a good probability that whatever Kojima announces at GDC next week will be current-gen.

But the most important thing to consider is that the amount of time put into the Fox Engine wouldn't make sense if it weren't going to be used thoroughly. If nothing else it'll be used for current-gen but then be upgraded to use with next-gen products. That's no reason to ruin the hope for a Metal Gear near PlayStation 4's launch, though.

Stay tuned for the full scoop on Kojima's latest engine and upcoming game.
