Fortnite Marshmello concert breaks record, over 10 million concurrent players

Epic Games’ Fortnite Marshmello concert has smashed the game’s previous record for concurrent players. The concert featured popular DJ Marshmello and saw 10.6 million concurrent players take part in the Fortnite event. The concert was part of the game’s Fortnite X Marshmello event, which saw cosmetic items and challenges added to the game alongside the in-game music concert.

According to GameIndustry.biz, the Fortnite Marshmello concert attendance of 10.6 million concurrent players in the game meant that the previous record was broken by 2.5 million. The previous record was set during an in-game event centered around a mysterious cube. Fortnite broke records elsewhere as well. The game beat its record for the number of concurrent players not during an in-game event, 7.6 million players were playing the game at its peak on February 16.

Apex Legends recently made headlines for its stunning early success. While impressive, Apex Legends noted highest concurrent number was 2 million players, a figure dwarfed by this latest Fortnite statistic. Fortnite is facing significant competition from Apex Legends in the online streaming space, however. In its first week, Apex Legends soared ahead of Fortnite in Twitch streaming figures. Epic Games responded to the new rivalry in an interesting way, placing Fortnite ads on Google searches for Apex Legends to try to redirect fans of Respawn Entertainment’s title to them.

Nevertheless, the stream of Fortnite news doesn’t stop for records. Epic Games recently sued an unofficial Fortnite-themed festival, named “Fortnite Live”, in Norwich, England. The festival did not go down well. In other Fortnite litigation news, Alfonso “Carlton” Ribeiro’s lawsuit against Epic Games for copying his popular “Carlton Dance” from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air appears to be going nowhere. Ribeiro’s application to have the dance copyrighted was rejected, meaning the likelihood of the star winning any lawsuit against Epic Games for its use of the dance is significantly lower.
