Rumor: Two Xbox Scarlett models launching in 2020, one will be digital-only

Two Xbox Scarlett models will apparently launch in 2020, with “Lockhart” and “Anaconda” providing players with both a budget and high-end version of the upcoming console. Lockhart will launch without a disc drive, making it a digital-only machine for players who wish to download their games rather than purchasing physical copies, while Anaconda will reportedly be a high-end model similar to the Xbox One X.

The leaked information was reportedly obtained by the French publication JeuxVideo.com, which also noted the projected specs of the upcoming consoles. Though the outlet stated that it hadn’t confirmed the validity of the specs it had received, which includes custom AMD Navi GPUs with 4+ teraflops of computing for the Lockhart and 12+ teraflops for the Anaconda, it did add that it can “confirm” the presence of SSDs in both consoles.

The Lockhart is said to be a cheaper Xbox Scarlett model, which will launch without a Blu-ray reader and therefore require its games to be digitally downloaded or streamed. On the other hand, the Anaconda will launch with all the bells ‘n’ whistles and will have a similar price to the Xbox One X at launch. The Xbox One X retailed for $499 when it was released.

According to the site, Microsoft will announce both consoles at E3 2019, which have been codenamed Lockhart and Anaconda. Microsoft will also allegedly reveal a disc-free version of the current Xbox One in the coming months, presumably to prepare consumers for a digital-only system in the future.

The report also claims that Halo Infinite will be a cross-generation release, meaning that it will launch on the Xbox Scarlett and the Xbox One, while Ninja Theory is also working on a game for the console that will release in 2020. The two systems will reportedly be released in fall 2020, meaning that they will launch between September–December.

This rumor comes following speculation that Microsoft will bring its Xbox Game Pass service to the Nintendo Switch, with games such as Forza Horizon 4 and Gears of War potentially making their way to the handheld/home console hybrid. Though none of these rumors have been confirmed by Microsoft and should be taken with a pinch of salt as a result, we’ll apparently be introduced to a disc-less sooner rather than later.
