The Elder Scrolls 6 Redfall title facing trademark dispute

The Elder Scrolls VI was announced at Bethesda’s conference at E3 last year, but much like the studio’s other RPG Starfield, we haven’t heard much about the game since. The next Elder Scrolls game in particular seems a long way off, and will probably be released on the next generation of consoles at this point. However, there’s also been rumors that the game would be called the Elder Scrolls 6 Redfall, based on a trademark that Bethesda filed a few months after reveal. However, that title is already causing issues, as it has brought Bethesda into a trademark dispute with author Jay Falconer, who may own the trademark to Redfall.

This trademark dispute was first spotted by YouTube channel Skullzi TV and then picked up by other websites, including GamesRadar, who received an official reply by Falconer about the court action. Apparently the author reached out to Bethesda to work out a “simple licensing deal” for the publisher to use the Redfall name, which he has trademarked and wrote two books for that both came out in 2016. If true, he is presumably happy for the publisher to use the Redfall name for a video game, but Bethesda apparently ignored him.

The name Redfall was spotted as a potential name for The Elder Scrolls 6 in September 2018, where Bethesda attempted to copyright it for “computer game software for use with computers and video game consoles.” If you look at the same trademark page now, it’s marked as facing opposition. While it does not clearly say that Redfall will be used as the title of the next Elder Scrolls, it certainly evokes the series. If the rumor is correct, then “Redfall” may have something to do with the desert warriors the Redguard, who live in Hammerfell. Alternatively, it could be the name of a new Elder Scrolls Online expansion. Expect more information as we hear it.
