PlatinumGames behind-the-scenes

Go on a PlatinumGames behind-the-scenes video tour

A PlatinumGames behind-the-scenes video has offered a unique look at the Japanese studio.  Platinum, the team best known for producing hits like Bayonetta and NieR: Automata,.are situated in Osaka, Japan. As the video below shows, the offices situated within the awe-inspiring Umeda Sky building are home to a tranquil environment, one at odds with the developer’s frenzied and frantic gameplay on which the company has built its name.

PlatinumGames is a studio known for breaking convention. Yet surprisingly, the video presents a rather calm environment. An environment mostly defined by minimalism, but sprinkled with nostalgic and a passion for video games.

Often videos like this will sell the hustle and bustle of popular game development. PlatinumGames’ video has a much calmer and, almost, soothing vibe to it. “Platinum maintains its luster forever” welcomes you to the studio followed by a screen showing off NieR: Automata in Xbox One Enhanced mode. What follows is mostly a nostalgia trip.

From cabinets of figures and game boxes to shelves with awards and framed badges, PlatinumGames appears proud of its history. This is epitomized in the release dates of their games being in the carpets, the history is literally woven into the company’s offices.

Clips of extremely empty meeting rooms follow, interestingly named by color. Next, the “Work Room”. In here, we see the development team at work. The largest room in the office with many desks packed into an open-plan layout. A programmer writing code and artists scrawling away on graphics tablets is evidence of a team still hard at work. Calm is then restored at the final stop of the tour: Platinum’s extensive library.

Contrary to the video, it hasn’t been all plain sailing for the studio. Platinum recently ended their relationship with Cygames, despite being in the middle of developing Granblue Fantasy: Relink [via Gamasutra]. More positively, the studio is currently developing Bayonetta 3 and Babylon’s Fall. When discussing the release of Bayonetta 3, a director at Platinum Games spoke about the potential of The Wonderful 101 being ported to the Switch.
