New Plants vs Zombies

New Plants vs Zombies and Need For Speed games due this year

It’s been a busy day for EA. Apex Legends, the latest game from Titanfall developer Respawn, had a successful surprise launch. Respawn’s Star Wars game Jedi: Fallen Order was confirmed as coming this year, and will get properly revealed soon. On the bad side, the financial underperformance of Battlefield 5 and a few other games have left EA waiting to see if BioWare’s Anthem can pick up the slack. Now EA has let slip that a new Plants vs Zombies shooter is coming, which is almost certainly the rumored Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 3. Furthermore, there’s also a new Need for Speed game in the works, and both games are due sometime in 2019.

Both games were revealed in the quarterly earnings call for EA earlier today. EA CEO Andrew Wilson was outlining the publisher’s plans for the year, to make up for the dip in revenue from the beginning of the quarter. In between the talk of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Anthem, FIFA, and a new Titanfall game, Wilson also mentioned that “a new Plants vs Zombies shooter and a new Need for Speed” were in development for a release sometime this year.

Since Wilson specifically calls the new Plants vs Zombies game a shooter, it’s probably Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 3, which was accidentally leaked almost a year ago by Amazon and a tie-in comic book, of all things. As for Need for Speed, it’s been two years since Need for Speed: Payback, so we’re certainly due for a new game in the series.

It’s unknown who the developer is for this title at this stage, whether it’s going to be Payback‘s Ghost Games or Burnout developers Criterion, who have only really been helping out on other studio’s games (such as Battlefield 5) since Need for Speed: Rivals in 2013. Both games will most likely be revealed at E3 in June, so we’ll find out then.
