Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day’s new Apple-exclusive comedy series is a sitcom about a video game studio. The new half-hour scripted show will be exclusive to Apple‘s upcoming streaming service, and much of the cast has been revealed.
Deadline reports that McElhenney and Day are starring alongside a standout cast featuring Oscar winner F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus), Danny Pudi (Community), Imani Hakim (Everybody Hates Chris), David Hornsby (It’s Always Sunny), Ashly Burch (Horizon: Zero Dawn, OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes), Jessie Ennis (Better Call Saul), and Charlotte Nicdao (Camp). Deadline describes the series as a “cutting-edge comedy” set in a game studio that will “explore the intricacies of the human condition through hilarious and innovative ways.”
The project will be McElhenney and Day’s first new collaboration since creating It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in 2005. Lionsgate, 3 Arts, and Ubisoft are producing the new comedy series, which was announced in August 2018. Apple’s streaming service is reportedly launching sometime this spring and is an attempt to rival Netflix and Hulu by providing original content.
Most of the cast has had their characters revealed, which gives us an idea as to their personalities could be. McElhenney portrays Ian, the creative director at the studio in the upcoming series. Charlotte Nicdao plays Poppy, the studio’s lead engineer. F. Murray Abraham is C.W. Longbottom, a writer at the studio. Danny Pudi will be Brad, an alpha-male type who works on monetization. David Hornsby portrays David, a “hapless, emasculated producer.” Jessie Ennis plays David’s over-eager assistant, Jo. Imani Hakim plays Dana, a studious and sweet game tester. Ashly Burch portrays Rachel, a game tester who feels undervalued in her role.
Given the creative duo’s penchant for absurd antics in It’s Always Sunny, the chance of this new series being fun is high. Its chances of accurately portraying game development are probably significantly lower. Even if it’s just a bunch of jabronis doing dumb stuff under the guise of game development, it’ll probably appeal to some people out there.
