A New Lemmings Game Is Out Now On Mobile

For the first time since 2006, a new Lemmings game has been released in the form of a mobile title simply called Lemmings.

Sony announced their European PlayStation blog today that a new game in the series is now out for iOS and Android. It will feature in-app purchases, but the game came be played entirely for free. Check out the trailer below:

Like previous games in the series, Lemmings has you control the iconic green-haired creatures, leading them to an exit a stage while avoiding traps and enemies. The goal is to get through each stage while losing the least amount of Lemmings possible.

With its release on mobile, the series has been re-engineered to play in portrait mode on phones. Since this is a mobile release, touch controls will help you move the Lemmings to safety.

Aside from the green-haired regular Lemmings, there are also a number of other Lemmings found in the game with distinctive looks. These are tribes, groups of characters that earn big rewards for players when collected. These are set to roll out over time and will be based on seasonal items, cultural events, and more.

Psygnosis, the original developers of the game, were shut down earlier this decade. Sad Puppy are the developers behind this new mobile iteration of the franchise.

The first Lemmings game was released back in 1991 for the Amiga. It would later be ported to just about every single gaming console out there at the time. This is the first game in the series to come out since 2006’s Lemmings reboot on the PSP, which was developed by Team 17.

The Lemmings franchise is in fact under the Sony umbrella. That happened when Sony bought Psygnosis in 1993. The developer would go on to release classic early era PlayStation 1 titles such as Wipeout and Colony Wars. In 2000, the studio was renamed to SCE Studio Liverpool, and from there they went on to develop more games in the Wipeout series before Sony shut them down in 2012.
