Neon Genesis Evangelion to Stream on Netflix

Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of the all-time most popular anime series, is coming to the streaming platform, Netflix. The classic original anime and two of its films will be available to view in spring 2019.

The official Netflix NX Twitter account posted the reveal alongside a new trailer from the series. According to the trailer, this will be the first time Neon Genisis Evangelion has been tied to a streaming service that will be available worldwide.

Having the original Neon Genisis Evangelion series is a big pull for the streaming service. Over the years, Netflix has been improving and expanding its anime lineup by not only hosting popular hits like Death Note and Akira but also producing its own contributions like the beautifully weird Devilman Crybaby and the break out comedy Aggretsuko.

Neon Genisis Evangelion is considered by many fans to be a formulative anime. On the outside, it appears as a standard mecha style fighting series where the protectors of Earth fight for the survival of the species against in invading force. Upon watching, viewers over the years have been confronted with themes of self-worth, depression, abandonment, and abuse.

While the series only managed 26 episodes with the final few being thrown together with fewer resources, it has been constantly reviewed and reimagined through its movies. For now, Netflix will be streaming the first two Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion which were both released a year after the main series ended in 1996. As of yet, there is no word as to whether or not Netflix will acquire the rights to the rest of the Evangelion films.

Neon Genisis Evangelion is by far not the only thing to be excited for coming to Netflix. Just today the streaming service now has a playable version of Telltale’s Minecraft Story Mode. Those outside the United States will also soon be able to watch Titans, the new DC Universe live-action TV show.
