Twitch Game Store Shutting Down After November 27

Twitch Game Store Shutting Down After November 27

Sad news, streaming fans: the Twitch game store is shutting down.  The feature, which allows you to buy games directly from the store, as well as allowing users to support streamers, is closing its doors on November 27, 18 months after launch.

The streaming service said in a statement (H/T TechRaptor) that they would be dropping the store because its intentions weren’t being met. The goal was for streamers to make income based off of game sales. However, it “didn’t provide most streamers with significant additional revenue.”

The statement goes on to say the company will continue to provide other ways to help support streamers.

“We are discontinuing this feature to invest in other ways to help you obtain games and in-game items directly on Twitch while supporting streamers, including through extensions on Twitch like Amazon Blacksmith, which allows viewers to supports streamers through purchases of games and other items.”

If you worried about losing any content, don’t fret as you will not lose any content purchased through the storefront. You’ll still be able to launch the games you purchased on Twitch’s desktop application or UPlay, Ubisoft’s gaming service. Twitch Crates that have not been opened before November 27 will be open automatically after the date.

The service launched back in February of last year. The goal was to provide video games, DLC, and other content while supporting streamers. Many of Ubisoft’s titles appear on the storefront, including South Park: The Fractured But Whole and games in the Assassin’s Creed series.  In game items and DLC from games such as Archeage, Defiance, Rift and Smite were also made available.

But, it seems people weren’t doing that in droves, and perhaps it was best to stop. After all, there are still plenty of other methods around that will provide for and help hardworking streamers.
