App Developer Launches Crowdsourcing Campaign To Buy Homeworld IP From THQ

TeamPixel isn't going to wait for the rest of THQ's bankruptcy chips to fall. Since the Homeworld IP was not included as part of Sega's purchase of Relic Entertainment, teamPixel has decided to try to take matters into their own hands and purchase the IP themselves, thereby ensuring that the series will be loved and continued. What's the best way to do that if you're low on funds? Why, you start a crowdsourcing campaign, of course.

The campaign is only asking for $50,000 from Homeworld fans, and the developer is seeking private funding with other investors. The purpose of the campaign is to simply raise enough money to acquire the IP, and with any funds they raise that exceed their $50,000 goal, they will put that toward developing their plans for the Homeworld series. They even go as far as to say that if they raise $750,000, all contributors will receive a free copy of Homeworld 3 upon completion.

As of now, their plans include:

  • bringing the original Homeworld to Steam and GOG.com,
  • bring the original Homeworld to mobile devices with touch controls, and
  • develop a Homeworld 3.

If you're hesitant about donating money for an auction where it's possible teamPixel won't win, don't worry. The developer has assured all backers that if they do not procure the IP, everyone will get their money back, as that is what the money was raised for.

Straight from the Save Homeworld campaign site, the developer assures, "If we are unable to secure the rights to the Homeworld franchise during the THQ bankruptcy auction or through negotiations with the auction winner, we will refund your donation. TeamPixel will cover any campaign fees so you don't have to. Without the Homeworld franchise, we have no way to act on our ideas, and so you deserve your money back."

Do you love Homeworld enough to back teamPixel and their plans? Or would you rather remember Homeworld fondly and see it quietly pass away?
