Meve in the new Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales gameplay trailer.

Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales Gameplay Trailer Released

A Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales gameplay trailer was released today. The Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales gameplay is built around the in-universe Gwent card game that featured prominently in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and was spun off into a standalone multiplayer release. Thronebreaker takes that core experience and builds a 30 or so hour isometric RPG on top of it.

The new gameplay trailer sets up the story and moment-to-moment experience of Thronebreaker. Players control Meve, queen of Lyria and Rivia, as she attempts to fight back the invading Nilfgaardian Empire. Meve travels across her lands and into neighboring territories to enlist the support of the Mahakam dwarves, and other kingdoms within the Northern Realms. As in other Witcher games, players will be asked to make many decisions during their journey—and these decisions could have dire results.

Thronebreaker handles combat and other encounters through a collectible card game based on The Witcher 3‘s Gwent. One significant change for the standalone game is that Thronebreaker culls the rows from three per side to two. The gameplay trailer shows Meve’s army taking over enemy rows, and causing havoc for their enemies through devious strategy. The War Camp is  Thronebreaker‘s hub area, where troops can be trained and upgraded.

Resource gathering and exploring the world are two other aspects of the game. Finding treasures hidden in the world may unlock new troop cards, or give Meve’s army the edge in fights. CD Projekt Red handcrafted all of the game’s battles to ensure quality. Familiar and unfamiliar faces crop up throughout the game, with characters such as Geralt of Rivia being teased in the trailer.

Thronebreaker The Witcher Tales is set to release exclusively on GOG.com for PC on October 23. The $29.99 standalone title will also be coming to PS4 and Xbox One on December 4.
