Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Sales Debut at Number One in Japan

Call of Duty Black Ops 4 sales have done remarkably well worldwide, and that applies to Japan as well. Only two new releases managed to enter this week’s Japanese game charts, including the aforementioned latest installment in Activision’s iconic FPS franchise and Varnir of the Dragon Star: Ecdysis of the Dragon.

According to the most recent Media Create Sales figures, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 rose to the top of the Japanese software sales charts, selling a total of 228,775 for the PS4, to date. In fact, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 sales is actually the franchise’s best debut in Japan compared to previous titles in the past few years. In comparison, 2017’s Call of Duty WW2 and 2016’s Call of Duty Infinite Warfare only sold 168,234 and 105,764, respectively, at launch. Meanwhile, Black Ops 4‘s predecessor, 2015’s Call of Duty Black Ops 3, managed to sell 143,817 on the PS4.

Last week’s top charters like Super Mario Party and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey had to settle for the second and third place, respectively. Ubisoft’s latest installment in the iconic franchise has sold less than 100,000 units to date, with a total of 64,204. Last month’s releases like Spider-Man PS4 and FIFA 19 have managed to remain in the top ten of the Japanese charts. Several games from 2017 also remain in the top ten, such as Nintendo Switch exclusives Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

On another note, the Nintendo Switch remained the undisputed king of hardware sales in Japan, with the PS4 selling less than half the number of units as the hybrid console. With the Switch already outselling the PS4 with a ratio of two to one in Japan, the reign of Sony’s console in this generation might be ending soon even in its home country. As usual, the Xbox family of consoles stayed at the bottom of the hardware sales charts.
