Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Day One Patch Required to Access Game

A Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 day one patch will reportedly be required before users can play it. Seemingly in a bid to prevent some players from spoiling the title ahead of its official launch day, Treyarch won’t let the game be played before October 12. There’s no word on how big the day one patch will be, but don’t expect it to be too significant to make your wait to play a long one.

(Editor’s note: ShAdoWw’s Twitter account has been suspended.)

The reveal comes courtesy of Twitter user ShAdoWw – a member of the Call of Duty fansite Charlie_Intel – who posted an image on their personal account. The screenshot in question shows Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s screen informing the player that the game cannot be played without an update. ShAdoWw has a disc copy of the title already, but is unable to access it without the day one patch. When asked again on Sunday, he insisted that he still couldn’t access the game’s modes.

Much like ShAdoWw, some players may end up receiving their copies – digital or physical – earlier than the release date. This could happen through pre-ordering the title or picking up a copy that’s wrongly already available on store shelves. However, in an effort to stop gamers playing it early and posting spoilers online, Treyarch have opted not to let it be playable before this Friday.

Treyarch’s decision follows that of fellow Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer. The latter of this duo also installed a feature on their Call of Duty: WW2 copies that disabled access to the game before its official launch day too. The Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 day one patch is likely to include extra tweaks and bug fixes that have only been discovered recently, but making the game unplayable for now will be the big reason behind this decision. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be available to play on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
