Sanderson wants his epic fantasy Mistborn books to become video games.

Mistborn Author Brandon Sanderson Wants to Work With CD Projekt Red

Author Brandon Sanderson has said he’s open to granting CD Projekt Red rights to his Mistborn series. Sanderson mentioned his openness in a Reddit thread on October 3. The Mistborn series began in the mid 2000s, and Sanderson has released eight books so far.

The author replied in a Reddit thread regarding CD Projekt Red’s legal trouble with Witcher series author Andrzej Sapkowski.

“In all seriousness, I’d love to do something with CDPR. They’ve made by far the best book-to-video game adaptations ever. It’s the sort of thing the rest of us salivate over — if for the simple reason that the entire genre (books, film, and games) benefit from something high-quality on the market like the Witcher games. I would seriously consider giving CD Projekt Red the rights to my books for free, because the overall cultural impact that a great story adaptation can have is enormous.”

Crafty Games released a Mistborn tabletop game in 2011. Sanderson worked with Crafty Games to produce the game. The company also developed a board game called Mistborn: House War based on the series. House War shipped in 2017, and a digital version became available in mid-2018.

Video game developer Little Orbit were working with Sanderson to produce Mistborn: Birthright for the PS4 and Xbox One. That game was announced in 2012. Sanderson called Birthright “dead” in November 2016. There was an official cancellation in mid-2017. His disappointment with that game’s development has not spurned him from working on other adaptations of the Mistborn series.

CD Projekt Red is currently developing Cyberpunk 2077 alongside Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Cyberpunk 2077 is an adaptation of the Cyberpunk role-playing game created by Mike Pondsmith. Thronebreaker is an extension of CD Projekt Red’s take on The Witcher, and seems to be what spurred Sapkowski’s recent lawsuit. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched in 2015 to critical and commercial success, and has sold over 10 million copies.
