Best Shooter 2012

Borderlands 2 – Best Shooter 2012

Platform(s): PS3, 360, PC

Publisher: 2K Games

Developer: Gearbox Software

Ultimately, the winner came down to choosing between Borderlands 2 and Halo 4. Far Cry 3 has a breathtaking open world but a disappointing story campaign, Spec Ops: The Line has a meaningful story on war but monotonous environments and difficulty spikes, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier has great overall mechanics but its cut-scenes drag it down.

On paper, Borderlands 2 and Halo 4 have much in common. They're both sequels that improve upon their predecessor, both have compelling single-player campaigns, and both have strong multiplayer in their own ways. But where Borderlands 2 excels over Halo 4 is in its narrative, with a crazy cast of characters and dialogue that's incredibly humorous or dramatically serious when it needs to be. In fact, one of my friends was left visibly distraught after one particular cut-scene involving a member of the original cast. I won't ruin it for you.

Gearbox Software also has a knack for delivering great DLC, listening to its fans, and giving players a heck of a lot of loot. Oh, sweet loot. (I loves my gun.)

Runners Up:

  • Far Cry 3
  • Spec Ops: The Line
  • Halo 4
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Future Soldier
