More details on the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout mode have been unveiled. This is the battle royale mode announced at the reveal event in May but details were scarce. After months of speculation, we know the player count (for now), some of the vehicles, and more.
Game Informer was recently allowed to see the new Blackout mode for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 for the outlet’s upcoming cover story. Most importantly, the mode will hold 80 players instead of following the precedent set by games such as Fortnite or PUBG. The reason for this lowered player count, according Treyarch Co-Studio Head Dan Bunting, is simple.
For the developer, the gameplay experience of the mode, rather than its player count, is what’s important. To Bunting, a player count of 80 is “the ideal perfect format for what players are going to play.” He did add that the developers have gone over 80 players in the mode before and that feedback may change that number later on.
Another interesting addition to the Black Ops 4 Blackout mode is vehicles. Within the upcoming beta – and the full release – a few vehicles will be available during the battle royale mode. The vehicles included will be:
- A Cargo Truck (which holds one driver and four passengers)
- An ATV (which holds one driver and one passenger)
- A Zodiac Inflatable Boat (which will hold one pilot and three passengers)
- A Little Bird Helicopter (which will hold one pilot and four passengers)
Finally, Game Informer also revealed that the Black Ops 4 Blackout mode will include zombies. This seems to be at least part of Treyarch’s spin on the battle royale trend and sounds a little similar to Dying Light Bad Blood. Dying Light‘s “Brutal Royale” has twelve human players and zombie enemies. Blackout will likely have the undead roaming the map as players to kill each other.
