Gone Home Switch Release Date Revealed

One of the most beloved — and most hated — walking simulator is finally coming to the only console that you can play while walking around. Fitting. As was announced by publisher Annapurna Interactive via Twitter, the Gone Home Switch release date is August 23 and will be on the Nintendo eShop for an undetermined price. It is currently $14.99 on the Xbox One, PC, and PS4.

This announcement celebrates the fifth anniversary of the game, which came out on PC on August 15, 2013. While it had some detractors that latched onto its slower nature and socially progressive narrative, Gone Home released to positive reviews and near-universal critical acclaim. Despite some troubles, it later made its way to the PS4 and Xbox One in January 2016 under its Console Edition moniker. However, its ill-fated Wii U port was eventually canceled.

The Gone Home Switch version is likely not going to have many — if any — new features. The Console Edition was basically the same game on a newer engine (Unity 5) and came with the behind-the-scenes commentary from the creators, actors, and composers that was later patched into the PC release.

Majesco Entertainment handled these console ports after Midnight City, Majesco’s indie publishing label, fell on hard times. Although production company Annapurna Interactive is stepping in to help with this Gone Home Switch version. Annapurna Interactive is known for publishing games like What Remains of Edith Finch, Flower, and the upcoming Donut County. It’s a subsidiary of Annapurna Pictures, which has co-produced and/or distributed films like Sorry to Bother YouPhantom Thread, Her, and 20th Century Women.

Gone Home was developer Fullbright’s first game. The team was made up of former 2K staff members that had worked on Minerva’s Den, BioShock 2‘s well-regarded expansion. Fullbright’s second game, Tacoma, came out in August 2017 but did not quite match its predecessor’s critical acclaim.
