Monster Hunter World PC Breaks Record for Biggest Japanese Game to Ever Launch on Steam

Monster Hunter World was already wrecking a lot of records back when it was only available on the PS4 and Xbox One. Now that Monster Hunter World PC is finally out in the wild for the vast number of PC players, it’s breaking even more records. The most impressive part of it all is that it’s barely past its first day since launch, and it’s already become both the biggest Japanese game launch on Steam and biggest Steam launch of any game in 2018 to date.

At the time of writing, SteamChart reports that the all-time peak of concurrent players for Monster Hunter World PC on Steam was a whopping 271,892. In comparison, IGN reports that the previous record holder for the biggest Japanese game to launch on Steam was Dark Souls 3, with a peak of 129,831 concurrent players. That’s double the number of concurrent players.

Steam users were not allowed to preload the game prior to its launch, so the all-time peak of concurrent players may continue to increase. This is especially so as we enter the weekend, which is when a lot more players should be clocking in their game time. The biggest Steam launch of 2018 was previously Kingdom Come Deliverance, which managed to reach a concurrent peak of nearly 96,000 players when it launched back in February 2018.

All this should be good news for Capcom, as company stocks should bounce back from recent downward trends. Fears arose last month as the game was considered a “risk” which in turn caused the developer’s stocks to begin plummeting. Meanwhile, Monster Hunter World PC players might have to settle for console graphics, for now at least. That’s according to the game’s producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, who also added that the developer is considering a free post-launch update to improve its visuals and performance on PC hardware.
