Nintendo Switch Sales Nearly at 20 Million Worldwide, Game Sales Just as Impressive

Nintendo Switch keeps on trucking. That’s the official word from Nintendo (well, at least we hoped it was). Worldwide Nintendo Switch Q1 sales are very close to hitting 20 million as of writing. Indeed, they may have even surpassed 20 million, as the Nintendo financial results of Q1 have just been announced. Which covers April through to June 2018.

Specifically, Nintendo has sold 19.67 million Switch units worldwide as of June 30th. That’s almost 20 million in just over a year. To go alongside this, 86.83 million Switch games have been bought since the Switch released last March. That’s a lot of units. Rather than just announce lifetime sales to date, Nintendo also supplied us with Q1 specific details. A whopping 1.88 million Switch consoles were sold between April and June this year. Surprisingly, however, this represents a drop in sales.

Indeed, Switch sales last year were higher by 4.4 percent. We think this is most likely because the Switch was still brand new and more exciting back then. Despite this, game sales this year are up by 120.8 percent. The likes of Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (shifting a funky 1.40 million units), Mario Tennis Aces and Nintendo Labo all selling well over 1 million copies in a couple of months. In fact, game sales in this last quarter alone make up for 17.96 million of the 86.83 million sold since day one.

The 3DS hasn’t been so lucky, however. Despite reaching 72.89 million units sold since launch, 3DS sales are slowing rapidly. Only 360,000 3DS consoles were sold in Q1 worldwide. This is down 61.9 percent compared to last year. While 2.95 million in game sales represents a 49.6 percent swing down. It’s just hanging on at this point. The NES Classic sold 1.26 million, and Nintendo’s smartphone business is now worth $80 million (a 0.4 percent increase over last year).

Thanks to the Switch, Nintendo’s net sales have skyrocketed. $1.513 billion this year alone, with a profit of $394.6 million. This represents a 42 percent increase compared to last year. Those game sales are vital, and below, you can see a list of the million-selling Switch games to date:

  • Super Mario Odyssey (11.17 million)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (10.35 million)
  • The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (9.32 million)
  • Splatoon 2 (6.76 million)
  • 1-2 Switch (2.45 million)
  • ARMs (2.01 million)
  • Kirby Star Allies (1.89 million)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (1.42 million)
  • Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (1.40 million)
  • Nintendo Labo (1.39 million)
  • Mario Tennis Aces (1.38 million)

It can only get better for the Switch, too. Games like Super Smash Bros UltimatePokemon Let’s Go! and the upcoming Metroid Prime 4 are sure to sell loads, too. Nintendo is having one hell of a time right now.
