Dead Cells to Launch in August on Consoles and PC

The Metroidvania meets roguelike game Dead Cells will be releasing on August 7 for consoles and PC. Alongside the release date, the developer Motion Twin also announced that the PC version will leave Early Access on the same day.

Dead Cells entered Early Access in May 2017 and has since garnered a sizeable and loyal fanbase. The game has sold nearly 1 million copies since its Early Access release and that number will rise when the game officially releases in August. Pre-orders are now available PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Pre-ordering the game will give a rather cool 20% discount.

In Dead Cells, you take control of the dead body of a prisoner. You progress through the game’s procedurally generated dungeons slaying enemies, picking up skills and loot in the process. The game wants you to explore each dungeon you enter so you can find secret rooms and hidden passageways. Dead Cells is a mixture of both Metroidvania and roguelike elements.

The game will have 13 levels, four bosses, over 80 weapons and a ton of skills. There will also be a Daily Run mode which is exclusive to PC. Leaderboards will also be up and running when the game launches. The upcoming title also features permadeath, a feature that is associated with roguelike games. You will die a lot in this game.

Metroidvania games have seen a resurgence in recent years. Games like Rogue Legacy, Strider, and Hollow Knight have all occupied the genre and achieved both critical and commercial success.  Koji Igarashi, who directed the phenomenal Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, is also making a brand new Metroidvania game titled Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The game was successfully funded on Kickstarter and is scheduled to release sometime this year. Igarashi and his team recently released Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon.

Dead Cells will release on August 7 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
