Brawlhalla Developer Acquired by Ubisoft

Ubisoft has officially acquired Blue Mammoth Games, the developer of Brawlhalla. This is a great catch by Ubisoft, considering that Brawlhalla is currently the most played fighting game on Steam, with over five million players worldwide.

Blue Mammoth Games co-founder Matt “Matterhorn” Woomer revealed the news via an announcement on the official Brawlhalla site today. He said: “Last year, Brawlhalla was growing, the community was growing, esports was growing, the studio was growing, everything was going great. But as we grew up and up, we also began seeing the ceiling for a scrappy, never-say-die indie studio. We realized that to complete our plan and take this crazy game to the next level, we were going to need help. So we went out looking for a partner.”

Woomer reassures Brawlhalla players that they will be running the game as they always have in the past. It will remain a free-to-play game, without pay-to-win elements. He adds that “Ubisoft shares that philosophy,” which is the reason they agreed to join the major game publisher.

This deal will contribute to the studio’s growth, as well as increase its stability. The developer will gain access to more resources to further improve the game and add new features, some of which are “long overdue.” Woomer explains that they will be able to get more “opportunities to raise Brawlhalla‘s profile among gamers.”

Blue Mammoth Games is an indie games developer based in Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded in 2009 by veterans from Cryptic Studios and Hi-Rez Studios. Specializing in online multiplayer games, it developed and published its second game Brawlhalla for the PS4 and PC in 2017.

Brawlhalla has also been quite prominent in the esports scene, with the developer often hosting their own official competitions. The first ever Brawlhalla World Championship was held in 2016, where hundreds of players competed for a share of the $50,000 prize pool. Meanwhile, the Brawlhalla Circuit was launched in 2017, a sanctioned worldwide circuit of official Brawlhalla tournaments hosted by several organizations.
