The Final Fantasy “Farewell Stories” 30th Anniversary Exhibition has reportedly debuted four new screenshots from the Final Fantasy VII Remake, which is still in development. The exhibition will be running until February 28 at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Roppongi Hills, Tokyo.
According to those who attended the exhibition, Final Fantasy VII‘s protagonist Cloud has been redesigned. Final Fantasy VII Remake lead developer Naoki Hamaguchi said that this new design was finally approved by director Tetsuya Nomura. Nomura reportedly recognized the design as being “the closest to the original design to date.” Hamaguchi added that the game’s development is doing fine and going as planned.
Nomura and Hamaguchi also mentioned that “Cloud may look like this but he has always been a dork. I believe that players of the original game would understand why I say this.” If this holds true, maybe we will see a more complex and emotional Cloud, instead of the stoic and serious Cloud that is usually portrayed in media outside of the games.
According to Twitter reports, the four screenshots depicted Cloud and the members of Avalanche. Biggs has been described as “super handsome,” Wedge as “refreshingly chubby,” and Jessie as “cute.” Unfortunately for the rest of us, the screenshots were shown behind closed doors and Square Enix has no plans to release them in the near future.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is in development for the PS4. The original game was released more than two decades ago in 1997 for the PlayStation console. The game features the protagonist Cloud Strife, a mercenary who joins AVALANCHE, which is an eco-terrorist organization. The plot revolves around AVALANCHE’s struggle against the megacorporation SHINRA, from using the planet’s life force as a source of energy. The original game was released on PSN as PSOne Classic and later ported to the PC, iOS, and Android as well.
