The Nintendo Switch is officially the fastest-selling console of all time in the US, Nintendo has revealed.
The Switch has spent 10 months on sale, and in that time period, it has shifted 4.8 million units in the US. The previous fastest-selling console, Nintendo’s Wii, sold just over 4 million units within the same timeframe.
“Fans across the country have experienced the joy of playing their favorite games at home or on the go,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “Now that many more people have received Nintendo Switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”
The Nintendo Switch has clearly been a big hit over the holidays, bolstering its sales and propelling the console to this landmark achievement. Back in December, the Switch surpassed 10 million units sold globally, putting it on track with the PS4’s launch year sales. It’s unclear where this figure stands post-Christmas, but it’s likely that the Switch was a big hit throughout December.
The Switch had plenty of games to attract new buyers leading up to Christmas, with it boasting one of the best launch years in console history. From modern classics such as Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to multiplayer hits such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2, there’s plenty to attract new buyers and court an audience of both old and young players. Hopefully the Switch can continue this success into 2018.
