Iwata Combats Criticism Against New Super Mario Bros. Franchise

Nintendo has fallen victim to a number of complaints from gamers following their reveal of New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Mario Bros. 2, both of which are set to launch this year. This coupled with the fact that these games bear a striking resemblance to both New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros Wii is leaving many who want something fresh and new feeling frustrated with the company.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata addressed gamers' complaints in an interview with Kotaku, claiming that they aren't stretching the iconic plumber too thin with all of these installments, noting that they've only released one entry per platform. "We only create a New Super Mario Bros. title one [sic] per platform. I think we'll probably go ahead and continue at that pace," he said, adding just one caveat. "That being said, that's probably Miyamoto's choice, so I can't give you a 100 per cent guarantee that that's the pace we'll continue at."

In response to the similarity between the two New Super Mario Bros. titles launching this year, Iwata went on to say that "I believe the two titles are unique enough that I wouldn't say that I'm super-worried that people are going to be confused."

Perhaps it's time we think about removing the "New" from the title then? After all, these games are built upon the very same mechanics we seen for the past 20 years.
