Nintendo Drops Huge Hint That Smash Bros Switch is On its Way

Nintendo has dropped a major hint that Smash Bros Switch is on its way, with the Nintendo Switch now boasting support for GameCube controllers.

GameCube controllers are highly important in the Super Smash Bros competitive arena, with them lending themselves better to the fighting series’ frenetic gameplay than other control methods. As such, Nintendo made adapters so that GameCube controllers would work with both the Wii and the Wii U for their iterations in the Smash Bros series, with it now being discovered that GameCube controller support has quietly been added to the Switch.

In the console’s recent 4.0 update, Nintendo allowed the GameCube controller to work with the Switch using its adapter. Nintendo didn’t formally announce this change, but as reported by GameXplain, other USB controllers such as the Xbox 360 or Xbox One pads still don’t work with the console. This indicates that Nintendo has specifically intended for the GameCube controller to be made compatible with the Switch, thus suggesting that Smash Bros Switch is in the works.

While it’s hardly surprising that Nintendo would be working on Smash Bros Switch considering the popularity of the series, the company has yet to offer any details on what we can expect from the as-yet-unannounced game. This move at least suggests that it could be on its way sooner rather than later, and that those concerned that they’d have to play it using their Joy-Cons / Switch Pro Controller needn’t worry.

Opinion: Super Smash Bros is one of my favorite Nintendo series, so any new information pertaining to Smash Bros Switch is exciting. While I’m still impatiently awaiting any kind of announcement from Nintendo regarding their progress on the game, it’s nice to know that I’ll be able to dust off my old GameCube controllers when Smash Bros Switch finally comes around, and won’t have to waggle my Joy-Con controllers around like a mad man when trying to punch Kirby in his giant pink face.
