What Has Happened to Lara Croft’s Neck in the New Tomb Raider Poster?

The new Tomb Raider film has received its first poster, but everyone is more concerned about Lara Croft’s neck than seeing the video game heroine’s return to the big screen.

The film, aptly titled Tomb Raider, will see Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) taking on Lara Croft in a rebooted adaptation more in line with the game series’ post-2013 direction. The film will also presumably see Croft dealing with chronic back pain as a result of being forced to carry around her giant neck all day.

Here’s the poster everyone’s currently freaked out by:

Now, this isn’t an example of neck-shaming on our behalf. We’ve seen Alicia Vikander in other movies, and it is quite apparent that she has a perfectly normal human-sized neck that doesn’t look like it belongs to a Kaminoan from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.

What appears to have happened here is that the designers for this poster wanted to use an image of Vikander confidently facing out into a perilous ocean, but when taking the photos of her doing so realized that its viewers wouldn’t be able to adequately see her face. As a result, they Photoshopped her face to swivel around a bit, and now we’re left with this monstrosity.

While there’ll be those who argue that “no press is bad press,” there isn’t exactly a good track record for films with bad posters performing well at the box office, e.g. every recent Nicolas Cage film.

Tomb Raider is set for release in the US on March 16, 2018. Let’s hope Lara goes to see a doctor before then, because she isn’t going to be doing much tomb raiding with a neck like that.
