Jesus Beats Up Buddha in Controversial New Game Fight of Gods

The fighting game genre has had its fair share of controversies over the years. From Street Fighter II‘s bloodied combatants through to Mortal Kombat‘s violent Fatalaties, there has been a lot of material that has caused censors to shake their heads and overly concerned parents to write vitriolic letters to the government. Now Fight of Gods is here to stir up a fresh controversy, with it allowing players to assume the role of Jesus and beat up (or be beaten up by) a variety of other gods.

Fight of Gods is a recently released Steam early access game, and yes, it looks dreadful. However, it has attempted to hook players in by offering a unique, if not necessarily good, central hook: you can play as a god and beat up other gods. Alongside the likes of Buddha, Zeus and Anubis, players can also assume the role of the Son of God, Jesus, who literally separates himself from the cross before heading into battle.

The press release accompanying this announcements reads:

“Jesus and Buddha punch the holy $*!% out of each other in FIGHT OF GODS! Prepare for Immortal Kombat!

Who will prevail in the ultimate battle of gods? Will Jesus, fresh from ripping himself off the sacrificial cross, smite all his foes with the power of his Punishment Fist? Can Buddha slap his opponents into submission? Harness the power of fire, lightning, water, plagues and more as you pit gods and prophets such as Odin, Zeus, Amaterasu, Anubis, Moses and Athena against one another in one of the most unique and outlandish fighters ever created.”

Developed by Digital Crafter, Fight of Gods has somehow found itself being published by pQube, a UK-based company previously responsible for publishing games in the BlazBlue and Guilty Gear series. We have no idea why they agreed to greenlight this mess, but here we are.

Check out Jesus in action in the trailer below (there’s a sentence I never thought I’d have to write):
