Nintendo’s short direct livestream this morning was densely packed with Pokémon information, and it had just as much for older fans as it did for newer. In two separate announcements, Nintendo revealed Pokémon UltraSun and UltraMoon, followups to Sun and Moon, and the impending release of classic Pokémon titles Gold and Silver for the 3DS virtual console.
According to the livestream, UltraSun and UltraMoon will take place in the same universe as Sun and Moon, but will tell “an alternate story,” with Pokémon not featured in the original titles, and new gameplay features. Like all recent pairs of Pokémon games, these will hit the stores simultaneously on November 17th. There was no indication that these games would come to the Switch.
The release that will excite the classic fans, though, Gold and Silver‘s release on the 3DS Virtual Console, will be on September 22nd, giving you just enough time to play it constantly until UltraSun and UltraMoon release. Although, it’s not clear how, if at all, these releases will differ from the 2010 remakes of Gold and Silver – HeartGold and SoulSilver, which are playable on the 3DS. In fact, many people consider these better than the original releases, even though a straight remake is more nostalgic.
Of course, everyone was hoping for an announcement of what the rumor mill has been calling “Pokémon Stars,” believing it to be the third game in the Sun and Moon series, just as there has been since the beginning with Pokémon Yellow acting as the third game for Red and Blue. Unfortunately, that did not come to fruition, but all the Pokémon goodies that did get announce are sure to act as a consolation prize, at very least.
