Rumor: Eternal Darkness Sequel Canned Following Developer Lawsuit Loss

All is far from swell over at the Canadian-based development studio Silicon Knights, as Denis Dyack and co. likely won't be making a followup to their hit horror title that launched years ago on the GameCube. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is far and away the best title that the studio has ever crafted (unless of course you're a super fan of their MGS remake Twin Snakes) so the rumor that Nintendo has elected to cease production on the game is particularly disheartening.

The original Eternal Darkness was a psychological thriller that packed more scares and tense moments than the majority in its class. Not only that, but with the ever-approaching launch of the Wii U, there's no doubt that a proper sequel to the game would have done wonders for recapturing their core audience. Just imagine the possibilities with that tablet controller.

Just a week ago, Silicon Knights lost their lawsuit against Epic Games, leaving them in a particularly sticky situation. As such, it appears that Nintendo is no longer interested in working with the studio, as NeoGAF user Shiggy is currently reporting that “When Nintendo saw that they would need to pay an additional 10 million USD to have the company survive that develops the game, they didn’t seem to like it, especially as they wouldn’t get anything in return. NCL reviewed its decision and it appears as if Eternal Darkness 2 is cancelled for now.”

We still have yet to hear from Nintendo or Silicon Knights regarding the state of Eternal Darkness 2, so this will have to remain a rumor for the time being. At least hopefuls like myself can stay in denial a bit longer.
