RUMOR: Project Durango Will Not Have A Disc Drive

Hey kids, there's a new console coming! You know what that means; it's rumor mill time from "sources"! Yay!

According to one such "source" who spoke with MCV, Project Durango—the next Xbox—will not have a disc drive. It will, instead, offer "some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage." It was not confirmed if this "card storage" will be proprietary like the Vita's storage or regular ol' SD cards you can snag for $10.

This is a rumor to be sure, but I honestly would not be surprised if this came to pass. We're on the road toward digital-only media, and Bill Gates himself said years ago—during the whole HD-DVD/Blu-ray war—that going digital for all media is the future. At the time he meant it for movies and TV, but it's becoming a closer and closer reality for games, especially with the popularity of XBLA and PSN games and, of course, Steam.

How I feel about it is a different story entirely. I kind of waffle on both sides of liking it and hating it. But supposing that this rumor is true, what do you think?
