December NPD Results: Xbox 360 Reigns Supreme

The NPD sales results for December, that all-important holiday sales month, have now been released.

Just like every month throughout 2011, the Xbox 360 is the victor. This month, though, was a banner month for the aging console moving 1.7 million units – a 46% market share among home consoles in December.

Since console sales figures direct from NPD are no longer available, we have to rely on estimates to determine the Wii and PlayStation 3 numbers based off the Microsoft's gloating. Estimates that put the Wii just over one million sold, and the PS3, just under.

While these numbers are staggering, hardware sales are down 28% compared to December 2010. Software is down 14%. Maybe it is time for those new, next-gen consoles after all. That or some serious price drops.

NPD continues to provide direct software results, and to no one's suprise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 dominated the chart.

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – Activision Blizzard
  2. Just Dance 3 – Ubisoft
  3. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Bethesda Softworks
  4. Mario Kart 7 – Nintendo
  5. Battlefield 3 – Electronic Arts
  6. Madden NFL 12 – Electronic Arts
  7. Assassin's Creed: Revelations – Ubisoft
  8. NBA 2K12 – Take 2 Interactive
  9. Super Mario 3D Land – Nintendo
  10. Batman: Arkham City – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

NPD has also revealed the annual top 10 games of the year based on retail sales performance. The list reveals that two Call of Duty and two Just Dance titles have made the list.
