According To HAL Laboratory On Miiverse, The Next Kirby Title Will Be An Action Fighter

You might not see Miiverse as a delivery method for important information regarding upcoming releases, but when it comes to the ever-quirky HAL Laboratory and the Kirby series, stranger things have happened. Since Miiverse's servers still run on 3DS and Wii U, Satoshi Ishida took to the kid-friendly social network to drop some fresh Kirby information.

Ishida's post largely focuses on thanking fans for current and already announced Kirby games (Team Kirby Clash Deluxe in particular), but goes on to address a yet unnamed title in a follow-up comment.

As for upcoming games, we're going to let Kirby loose in a 3D world this summer in Kirby's Blowout Blast, and we're also planning an action fighting game for next winter.

It's nice to see Nintendo taking Kirby's 25th anniversary seriously, though I'll admit I'm extremely curious to learn what this Kirby "action fighting game" might be all about. Super Smash Bros. already has a lock on the pick-up-and-play fighting genre on Nintendo consoles, and is tied to HAL Laboratory as well. That said, given Smash's recent and ever-growing popularity as a competitive fighter, perhaps Nintendo decided that a new, truly casual and relaxed fighting experience is needed? It's difficult to speculate much further, but hopefully we'll find out more soon.

Also of note is that the most recent Smash Bros. title did not directly involve HAL – it was handled primarily by Sora Ltd. (headed up by Masahiro Sakurai) and Bandai Namco Games. As such, perhaps HAL misses the genre, and wants to see what Kirby can uniquely bring. Regardless, you can check out Team Kirby Clash Deluxe on the 3DS eShop now, and expect Kirby's Blowout Blast to show up sometime this summer.
