Atlus Says Persona 5 Has Already Shipped 1.5 Million Copies

Becoming a million-seller is often the hallmark metric of "big success" for games that don't mismanage their budgets, and despite the ever-growing popularity of Persona, I'm still always surprised and impressed when any JRPG crosses the one million mark outside of Japan. A recent Atlus announcement in tandem with simple math implies just that, marking a fast and important milestone for the critically acclaimed series.

Revealed on its Japanese website, Atlus confirmed that Persona 5 has shipped 1.5 million copies globally, with 550,000 of those shipped in Japan (where the game has been out since September of last year). As such, the implication is that approximately one million copies of Persona 5 have shipped since its global release just days ago, meaning copies have been near-literally flying off of shelves (or at least, onto shelves from shipping centers) in a very short period of time.

The announcement, loosely translated, reads as follows:

Hello, this is Persona public relations. "Persona 5", which has been patronized by many people since the domestic launch on September 15 last year, thanks to the release of the North American / European version on April 4, thanks to the fact that 1.5 million copies shipped worldwide, we broke through. I would like to express my deep appreciation to all of you. Thank you very much.

The game's success is no surprise given its quality, and helps in drawing attention away from Atlus's curiously strict sharing policy regarding spoilers for the game. For more Persona 5, check out our coverage hub, as well as our ever-growing selection of FAQs and guides.
