The Witcher Series Has Sold Over 25 Million Copies To Date, Says CD Projekt

Developer CD Projekt RED is known primarily for its Witcher RPG series, and with good reason. Outside of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 (of which we still know relatively little about), every single CDPR game developed has been either a mainline Witcher title or something Witcher related. It's good news, then, to learn that the series as a whole is performing quite well, according to information released earlier today by RED's publishing entity CD Projekt.

CD Projekt released a bevy of impressive numbers, stats, and tidbits, notable among them that its Witcher series has, to date, sold over 25 million copies. Also touted were impressive sales revenues and cumulative revenues, outlined below.

  • The CD PROJEKT Group reported 584 million PLN in sales revenues and 251 million PLN in net profit for 2016.
  • Cumulative revenues from sales of The Witcher 3 topped 1 billion PLN in 1.5 years.
  • Since the release of the first installment in The Witcher trilogy CD PROJEKT has sold over 25 million copies of The Witcher games.

The release continues, elaborating on the results and highlighting the creative benefits that result from CD Projekt's financial success moving forward.

The strong market position of The Witcher underpins the commercial success of the Blood and Wine expansion pack, published in May. The 2016 revenues and net profit of the CD PROJEKT Capital Group were equivalent to 75% of the corresponding figures for 2015, which is when the release of The Witcher 3 took place. These excellent financial results for the past two years enable us to pursue new, ambitious undertakings and further expand our enterprise. Key development projects currently underway include Cyberpunk 2077 and GWENT: The Witcher Card Game.

CD Projekt has posted detailed information on its website for those interested – otherwise, the simple takeaway is that The Witcher as a franchise is thriving and that this allows for more creativity, more IP, and yes, more Witcher. It's not often publisher financial news is this thoroughly rosy, so it's nice to see a company with as great a track record as CD Projekt get the success and subsequent creative leeway it deserves.
