ASUS Debuts 240HZ Monitor, Makes 60 FPS Look Silly

During the past few years ASUS has earned itself a reputation for having some of the best gaming monitors on the market. It's been on-time with every major evolution, from 4K to 120HZ.

It's pushing to the next step with what it calls the ROG Swift PG258Q. This 24.5" 1080p monitor has a native refresh rate of 240HZ, allowing up to 240 frames per second to be delivered to the screen. This makes it one of the first of its kind, in a market where 144hz have become incredibly popular for competitive games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends.

It also supports highly coveted Nvidia's G-Sync technology. This allows it to constantly adapt its refresh rate to match the framerate of games being played, effectively eliminating screen tearing. It does have 1ms response time, too. Yes, this means it's a TN panel, but it's impressive nonetheless.

As someone who has been convinced by 144hz, I'm curious what 240HZ looks like. It's unreasonable to expect any AAA games to perform at such framerates, but many of the most popular multiplayer games in the world aren't very demanding. I've personally seen rigs equipped with GTX 1070s pushing upward of 200 FPS in mainstream multiplayer games, so making use of such a monitor isn't unreasonable.

Due to the monitor's G-Sync support, it's likely to be expensive—G-Sync monitors tend to run more than $600. At this point it'd be worth trying out, even if just for science.

The ASUS ROG Swift PG258Q will release in early 2017.
