Ubisoft has announced that Tom Clancy's The Division will be adapted for the silver screen, and that the reclamation of New York City from gangs and looters will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.
Chastain's Freckle Films and Gyllenhaal's Nine Stories production companies will have a significant role in bringing the story of The Division to life, which will be, according to Ubisoft's official blog, "filled with countless stories of love, loss, treachery, and heroism." Okay, Ubisoft, let's not oversell the drama here.
That said, The Division has enough threads to pull to be an exciting film. I actually think that a TV series adaptation would have worked as well, as it would have the breathing room to develop the apocalyptic concept and broken-down urban world.
The Division joins other Ubisoft Motion Picture productions—Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Rabbids, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed—which shows Ubisoft's commitment to showing the movie adaptations of video games can actually work.
How successful do you think Ubisoft will be with its upcoming movies?
