Mojang has officially announced that the upcoming Minecraft movie will be released 1,061 days from now… That's May 24, 2019! Yes, that's extremely precise, so precise that it won't see any delays at all!
Sarcasm aside, it's quite bold to set a release date that's so far in the future. Vu Bui, COO of Mojang, has confirmed that the game will be released in 3D and IMAX and that the three-year development time "might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome."
All we really know so far about the project is that Rob McElhenney (It's Always in Philadelphia) will be directing the film. And Danny Devito will be playing the Creeper. Just kidding.
I hope that the Minecraft has the same energetic, playful tone as The Lego Movie while still capturing what's great about Minecraft. Mojang (and by extension, Warner Bros.) has plenty of time to figure out the film's script and direction; I mean, by then, Telltale will have come out with the 24th episode or something of its Minecraft series. Whatever it is, the Minecraft movie has to better than The Emoji Movie, right? Right?!
