Ambitious Ending Affected Uncharted 4 Delay

The latest issue of OPM hits store shelves today, and it includes an exclusive feature on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. Director Neil Druckmann talks about the development of the game in it, including how the ending was a key reason for the delay to 2016.

According to a GamesRadar+ report, Druckmann explains that the company felt bad about the Uncharted 4 delay since The Last of Us was "the first game we ever delayed." He then goes on to briefly mention the end of the game and how that factors into the delay.

“Even when I’m describing the ending, it’s a pretty… Well, I guess this is a little bit of a spoil… Nah, I’m not going to say it!" he exclaimed. "But there is something that happens that requires quite a bit of work for what we want it to do, and again we would have had to reduce that scope and reduce that ambition to meet that [original] deadline."

Druckmann then reiterated how "this is the last chapter for Nathan Drake, so let's give ourselves as much time as possible and go all-out for this series." As a huge Uncharted fan, I can get behind that development philosophy.

Video game endings can be tricky – just ask fans of the Mass Effect series. I'd prefer Naughty Dog to take its time to ensure a fitting end to Nathan Drake's story, especially since he's one of the more memorable video game protagonists of the last decade. Fingers crossed that it turns out well.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End comes out for PlayStation 4 on March 18, 2016.
